British Pop Nostalgia in the Alps: A Detail from The Girl from Cortina

So I (hopefully) have a post coming shortly about the 1994 thriller The Girl from Cortina to coincide with the 2026 Winter Olympics, but in the meantime, as Afterimages is all about smaller cinematic musings, here’s a little rabbit hole I unexpectedly disappeared down.

One thing I thought was cool while watching the film many years ago was that Mara, played by the gorgeous Vanessa Gravina, drives a classic Rover Mini. It instantly stood out to me because, in an Italian setting — especially one like Cortina — you half expect to see the usual domestic small-car royalty like Fiats or Autobianchis. The Mini feels slightly unconventional as a choice but one that carries a certain British eccentricity.

Mara isn’t driving a classic standard Mini as I had originally assumed, but one of Rover’s early 90s Italian Job editions, released around 1992–1993.

By the early 1990s, the classic Mini was already somewhat mechanically old-fashioned, but it had become culturally iconic. Rover leaned into that nostalgia by releasing a series of heritage-themed special editions that treated the Mini as equal parts transport and pop-culture artefact. The Italian Job version directly referenced the car’s legendary appearance in the 1969 film, complete with bright red bodywork, distinctive badging and decal detail that deliberately played into the film’s retro status.

The Mini was never an Italian automotive icon. In Italy, it tended to read more as imported British chic: slightly playful, slightly ironic, and very style-conscious. Which actually makes its presence in Cortina feel oddly perfect. Surrounded by Alpine luxury and prestige tourism aesthetics, Mara’s Mini is all about personality over status. It feels youthful, cosmopolitan, and it’s the perfect retro vehicle for a young woman forging a new identity in the nostalgic place she once called home.

It’s a small detail in the film but it’s genuinely fun spotting a British Mini in an Italian film from this period. And honestly, I always enjoy seeing iconic design appear on screen, especially in unexpected settings!
